Epimedium has been shown to have these pharmacological effects: 5
· AphrodisiacIt stimulates the production of semen, causing a filling up of the scrotum and stimulating the sensing nerves. The leaf and the root appear to be most potent for this.
· HypotensiveThe extract lowers blood pressure of several animals. It acts by dilating the peripheral blood vessels and inhibiting the vasomotor center in the brain.
· It also can serve as an anti-tussive, expectorant and an anti-asthmatic.
In 1990, researchers (Chen et al) discovered that extracts of Epimedium might have mono-amine-oxidase-ihibitor activity. In trials, they showed that levels of noradrenaline, adrenaline, serotonin and dopamine levels were all elevated in animals given Epimedium. Higher levels of dopamine particularly, may help to explain the pro-sexual effect of Epimedium. High dopamine levels encourage the release of leutenizing hormone (LH) from the pituitary gland. LH in turn stimulates the testes to produce more testosterone.
